A brand new online magazine is looking for a trainee Writer/Sub Editor to work as an assistant, alongside the editor of a brand new lifestyle magazine. The successful applicant will be assisting in creating, editing, rewriting and proofreading articles in addition to helping with the planning and organisation of content for future weekly publications. The content includes everything to do with a lifestyle magazine, that covers topics such as fashion, music, real life, politics, health and fitness and technology.
The role is for a 6 month period, covering three days over the week. This is an excellent opportunity for the right individual to gain valuable experience and help shape the foundations of this fresh new magazine. Furthermore, opportunities to progress within the company are available.
Responsibilities
- The candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the tone, style and layout of final copy matches the magazine’s house style and suits the target market. This will involve processing all the copy before it is published to ensure that it is grammatically and factually correct and reads well.
- rewriting material so that it flows or reads better and adheres to the house style of the magazine
- ensuring that a story fits a particular word count by cutting or expanding material as necessary;
- writing headlines that capture the essence of the story or are clever or amusing;
- writing stand firsts or 'sells' (brief introductions which sum up the story, underneath the headline);
- liaising with reporters or journalists to clarify facts and details about a story
- checking facts and stories to ensure they are accurate, adhere to copyright laws, are not libelous or go against the publication's policy;
- cropping photos and deciding where to use them for best effect;
- working to a page plan to ensure that the right stories appear in the correct place on each page;
- laying out pages and, depending on the nature of the role, playing a part in page design;
- manipulating on-screen copy using appropriate desktop publishing software, such as Quark Express, InDesign and Photoshop;
- adding last minute news stories;
- keeping up to date with sector issues, e.g. by reading related publications;
Candidate Requirements
- Be able to provide Opinion-Editorials', which involves calling experts from across the world on topical issues and asking them to contribute their thoughts
- Excellent proof-reading and communications skills in spoken and written English
- A proven ability to write for a variety of different audiences, including some research-based writing.
- A good understanding of the different requirements of online and print communications
- Writing stories to help news-desk if required
- Good IT skills and comfortable with learning new software
- General administration duties such as filing paperwork and arranging calenders
- Ideally studied journalism, but not essential as long as relevant experience has been sought
Qualifications:
- Journalism BA or MA degree/PG Dip Graduate/OR WORKING TOWARDS A DEGREE
- Shorthand skills (desirable but not essential)
- NCTJ qualified (desirable but not essential)
